Introduction

Lab BalancesProper use and regular maintenance of a balance is essential to ensure accurate weighing results. Touchscreen maintenance and care is an important part of keeping the screen functional. This is not only recommended but required for an OHAUS Explorer balance.

The Explorer balance comes with a large colorresistive touchscreen, which significantly improves operating efficiency - no training required. All you have to do is touch the infographic icons. What you want is right in front of you. A resistive touch LCD screen works on the basis of  pressure applied to the LCD screen. This property makes the screen easy to operate with your fingers - even with gloves on.

Many users have been using the Explorer balance for 5 to 10 years for daily powder sample weighing. Therefore, the question “How to maintain a touchscreen?” is frequently asked. Follow below recommendations to ensure a smooth operation so  that the touchscreen always responds quickly and properly to your touch.

Step 1: Clean the Touchscreen Often

To keep the functionality of your touchscreen, wipe it with a lint-free cloth (dry or lightly dampened with a mild cleaner) to remove any visible dirt and grime.

Step 2: Calibrate the Touchscreen

When pressure is applied on the screen, the two metallic conductive layers (ITO layers) come into contact, generating a change in resistance on both the vertical and horizontal axes. The resistance marks the location of a touchpoint. Different touch positions have different resistance responses to determine the position. In most cases, resistance value changes over time causing the corresponding position to be wrong, that is, the screen is not able to recognize your touch precisely. Therefore, it is required to perform touch calibration regularly to always deliver a great user experience.

How to perform maintenance:

Select the “Touch Calibrate” menu on the Explorer. Follow the on-screen instructions by touching the screen at the center of the ring, then testing and observing if the arrow moves with your touch. Accept and finish the calibration.

Tips: It is suggested to use a standard stylus (for resistive touchscreen) instead of your finger, so you get a precise touch. The finger is too coarse for a calibration job.

Step 3: Use an In-Use Cover

The resistive screen is designed with a soft top that can be easily pressed down. This makes the screen more prone to getting scratched. For maximum protection against scratches, putting a plastic in-use cover on your Explorer screen is recommended. Meanwhile, the cover must be regularly replaced in case of low sensitivity to touch that can be caused by plastic deformation.
