Introduction

In the chemical industry, packaging is an essential part of the process, and it comes with significant safety concerns. Chemical exposures present risk to operators, equipment, and workspaces. A Potentially Dangerous Industry

Chemicals such as alcohols, gases, pesticides, vehicle fuels, aerosol sprays, and hydrocarbon-rich compounds can cause physical harm if not handled carefully. Industrial chemicals and compounds can pose critical health hazards. Exposure to chemicals that are highly acidic or basic can cause burns and exposure to toxic aerosols can cause breathing issues. These types of chemicals are often flammable or support combustion.


For these reasons, the packaging process, including filling and capping containers is typically automated with minimal human interaction. Hazardous chemicals must be packaged by bottle filling machines to limit human interaction and thus, exposure risks.

Depending on the classification of the chemicals being packaged, transported, distributed, and/or stored, the containers used may be glass, plastic, or metal. Each variety comes with pros and cons.

Plastic bottles or containers are becoming less common due to environmental concerns. They can also transfer leaked chemicals from the plastic. Recycled glass is a popular option, however, the sealed cap is still going to be made of some form of plastic or rubber, which can be the most problematic source of leaking chemicals.

The Right Bench Scale for the Job

The new OHAUS Defender 6000 extreme washdown bench scale is built to withstand heavy duty usage and high-pressure, high-temperature wash downs common in chemical industry applications.

The open-back column makes for easy cleaning, and optional overpans reduce build-up. All these features work together to limit contamination risks. Additional safety features include a stability indicator, overload/underload indicators, auto shut-off, auto tare, and adjustable non-slip rubber feet.

The NSF-certified Defender 6000 meets metrological standards and supports HACCP systems, making it an excellent choice for regulated industrial environments like chemical processing and packaging.
